About South Carolina Lawyers
for the Rule of Law

Our Mission

Silence is not an option. Lawyers take a solemn oath to preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of this State and of the United States. For our democracy to function, there must be rules of conduct equally applicable to all persons. This fundamental principle is known as the Rule of Law and ensures that we are a nation of laws, not men.

Recently, the Rule of Law has been under attack. Perceived political opponents have been subjected to criminal prosecution. Convicted insurrectionists have been arbitrarily pardoned. The conduct of secret police has been shielded from investigation by State and local authorities. Citizens are being seized and homes invaded without judicial warrants. Citizens falsely labeled as terrorists and being killed, injured, and wrongfully incarcerated for protesting governmental abuses. Criminal conduct by the rich and powerful has been concealed. Court Orders are being willfully violated and judges at all levels are being vilified. The most fundamental right of all, the right to vote, is increasingly under attack.

The time to stand up is now. South Carolina Lawyers for the Rule of Law is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization of volunteer lawyers who seek to honor our oaths to preserve and protect the Rule of Law. To build a nationwide coalition with other like-minded lawyers and organizations. To educate the public about the importance of the Rule of Law to a healthy and functioning democracy. And, to litigate or assist other attorneys to litigate matters related to the protection of the Rule of Law.

The law must be above politics

We condemn government actions targeting law firms for representing clients in cases adverse to any administration. Stripping lawyers' security clearances and restricting courthouse access based on client representation chills attorney-client relationships and denies citizens their right to counsel. If lawyers are subject to government retaliation for taking cases, access to justice dies for all.

Our courts provide peaceful resolution for legal disputes while ensuring equal protection for all citizens. Whether rich or poor, popular or unpopular, your rights must be protected.

But this system only works when judges can judge fairly, lawyers can advocate fearlessly, and all participants feel safe.

We call on all South Carolinians to join us as we commit to the following action:

Ensuring Equal Protection

Guaranteeing Due Process

Supporting Judicial Independence

Defending the Right to Representation

Condemning All Threats to Justice

These are fundamental
rule of law principles

We agree with the late United States Congressman John Lewis:

If you see something that’s not right, not fair, not just, do something about it. Say something. Do something. Have the courage. Have the backbone to get in the way.

– U.S. Congressman John Lewis, 2016

Protecting the least among us
protects us all
